The Project
Grand hotel brasserie terrace
Founded in 1838 by Johannes Baur, the Savoy is Zurich's oldest grand hotel — reborn after a complete restoration as the Mandarin Oriental Savoy in late 2023, steps from Paradeplatz on the Bahnhofstrasse. The street terrace of its brasserie and bar is the hotel's public face, and its shade had to be tailored to the landmark facade, not bolted in front of it.
The hotel selected Glatz Palazzo Noblesse giant parasols in a custom execution: cream canopies with scalloped valances and contrast trim, matched to the hotel's awnings and colour scheme. Beneath the tailoring is full commercial engineering — wind-rated to 90 km/h, with the Palazzo line's telescopic mechanism that lifts the canopy over fully set tables as it closes, so staff secure the terrace in moments.
It's a demonstration of what CSC Shade specifies for flagship North American properties: custom fabric programs on Swiss structural hardware, where the shade becomes part of the architecture.
