Glatz & FIM · Wind-Rated · Built for North America
Windproof Commercial Umbrellas for Canada and the U.S.
Wind-rated commercial parasols engineered for North American conditions — certified against the Beaufort scale and ASTM F3512, from Glatz and FIM. Available across Canada and the USA with expert specification support.
Why Wind Rating Matters
A windproof patio umbrella is a specification, not a marketing word.
Ordinary patio umbrellas behave like sails: a sudden gust traps high-pressure air under the canopy, buckling joints or lifting the umbrella straight out of its base. A genuinely wind-resistant commercial umbrella is engineered and tested against a measurable standard — the Beaufort wind force scale (rated in km/h) and, increasingly, the ASTM F3512 wind-load test for market and cantilever umbrellas. At CSC Shade we specify only parasols with documented wind performance, drawn from two of the strongest engineering houses in the category: Glatz of Switzerland and FIM of Italy.
Rated in km/h & Beaufort
Every Glatz centre-pole model carries a certified wind limit — from 70 km/h (8 Bft) up to 115 km/h (11 Bft) — so you can match the umbrella to your site's real exposure.
Tested to ASTM F3512
ASTM F3512 is the North American standard for the wind-load resistance of market, patio, and cantilever umbrellas — a repeatable benchmark instead of vague claims.
Aerodynamic by design
Flat-roof canopy geometry, elastic strut flexing, and retractable or louvered systems shed wind load rather than trapping it — the physics behind staying upright.
Reading the Numbers
The Beaufort Wind Force Scale
Wind ratings on commercial umbrellas are expressed in kilometres per hour and on the Beaufort scale (Bft). Use it to translate a manufacturer's certified limit into the conditions your site actually sees — then leave a safety margin and close or retract ahead of anything beyond the rating.
| Beaufort | Description | Wind Speed |
|---|---|---|
| 6 Bft | Strong breeze | 39–49 km/h |
| 7 Bft | Near gale | 50–61 km/h |
| 8 Bft | Gale | 62–74 km/h |
| 9 Bft | Strong gale | 75–88 km/h |
| 10 Bft | Storm | 89–102 km/h |
| 11 Bft | Violent storm | 103–117 km/h |
Certified wind limits assume the umbrella is anchored with its original heavy-duty base or in-ground socket. Anchoring is part of the rating — a windproof canopy is only as strong as its connection to the ground.
The Windproof Collection
Our Most Wind-Capable Commercial Umbrellas
Centre-pole and cantilever parasols from Glatz, plus freestanding and louvered systems from FIM — each chosen for how it manages wind, from certified high-Beaufort limits to retractable canopies that close ahead of a storm.

Castello Pro
Highest-Rated Centre-Pole
The most wind-capable parasol in the range. An ultra-heavy-duty tensioning lever and reinforced mast let the Castello Pro stand firm through violent-storm-force gusts — the benchmark for exposed restaurant patios and coastal resorts.

Fortino Pro
Compact Strength
A compact centre-pole model engineered for high-exposure environments — elevated balconies, coastal dining patios, and rooftop bars. Fiberglass-reinforced crown and runner with rustproof A4 stainless rivets.

Fortero Pro
The Restaurant Favourite
Built for heavy-duty daily commercial use, with a massive 55 × 2.5 mm profiled mast and die-cast aluminium components. The preferred choice where large-footprint coverage and gale-force durability are required.

Sombrano S+
Wind-Rated Cantilever
A cantilever built for wind — 360° rotation, 54° tilt, and a ball-bearing base that keeps the canopy taut and stable. Clears table zones completely for unobstructed dining terraces and pool decks.

Flexy
Freestanding Retractable
An Italian freestanding retractable awning with no wall mounting. The canopy cranks closed in seconds ahead of a storm and the weighted base stays put — a practical windproof strategy for strata-regulated pool decks and patios.

Flexy Zen
Louvered · Wind-Managed
An architectural louvered canopy with adjustable aluminium blades. Open the louvres to let wind pass straight through rather than trapping it — precise control of light, ventilation, and gusts for boutique hospitality.
